Hand Soap Woes: Why is it so hard to find good hand soap for kids?

Fact: My kids are more likely to wash their hands if they can pump hand soap out of a container shaped like some fun creature, preferably a character they have seen on TV.

I have four kids and monitoring hand washing can be a challenge. Thus, I need them to be motivated to wash their hands without me hovering over them. While practical and more affordable, bar soaps and regular bottles of pump soap do not motivate my kids. Furthermore, I value using environmentally-friendly products and am not comfortable using chemical-filled products like Pampers Kandoo or a bottle of Dial with Hello Kitty on the front.

I like the ingredients in Treehouse by Nature Clean hand soap, but I find that too much sprays out and it gets used up fast (about 1 bottle every 10 days or so). Like most eco-friendly brands, Nature Clean is more expensive per bottle than traditional body care brands; however, the fact that it runs out so quickly adds considerably to this expense. Other eco-friendly brands are not widely available at my local grocery stores and pharmacies. For the sake of time, I need a product that I can purchase while I’m doing my regular grocery shop.

method hand soap

Method provides the best hand soap for kids that I’ve found. Method hand soap is not the cheapest option, but one bottle is long lasting (the soap runs out every 4-6 weeks). Being that it contains some synthetic ingredients for fragrance (and other ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate and synthetic preservatives that the green community tends to dislike), it’s not the most eco-friendly option. With that said, it’s greener than soaps like Pampers Kandoo, which is full of artificial colours, fragrances and chemicals.

Method hand soap for kids is biodegradable, triclosan-free, and has a relatively short ingredient list made mostly of plant-derived substances. Plus, it comes in a black bottle shaped like Mickey Mouse ears (lemonade scent) or Minnie Mouse ears (strawberry fizz scent).

Until I have time to search out a totally eco-friendly, yet effective, DIY hand soap recipe (which I will eventually use to refill the Mickey Mouse bottles), Method hand soap is the best option for my family.

Tell us: What kind of hand soap do your kids use? How do you motivate your kids to remember to wash their hands?
